Getting shot isn't fun—I should know. After a disastrous end to my last job, I tear through the streets of Pittsburgh in the back of a blackberry sedan, staining the upholstery as a chilly nursing school dropout with a morbid sense of humor ferries me to our next destination.

We dodge our pursuers and find sanctuary in a makeshift (and probably illegal) hospital, where a grieving ex-surgeon is my only hope as my consciousness fades like an old song. Infused with necromantic energy, I’m pulled into the Underworld on a morphine drip. There, a power struggle unfolds like origami, each crease more connected to my fleshy predicament than I could have ever imagined.

But as I'm laid up in a medical coma and the political web unravels, law enforcement comes calling, and the price of keeping me safe rises by the hour.

This is the second installment in an ongoing trilogy, wrapping up the main plot while leaving threads dangling for the future.

QUARTERLY SPECULATIVE FICTION PROMO

It's that time again! If you haven't already seen it, I've organized my seasonal speculative-fiction promo, which includes a collection of personally curated horror, sci-fi, and fantasy samples, short stories, and novels.

Most of you have looked over the Heck sample, so just ignore my work and focus on all those other great writers.

I got your guys' votes regarding what I should write next. Those Heck stories are still in the pipeline! But because it was a four-way tie and another friend linked me to a sci-fi contest, my next short story will be a sci-fi with some spooky elements. I think it's good enough I might get it published. Whether it is or not, I'll get it to you guys soon and work on those other stories.

Who knows, maybe I'll even have one or two to show you before the end of the New Year.
