An amazing piece from The Washington Post took data from a survey about 'when was 'x' the greatest

The authors then cleverly shifted the dates according to responders' DOB. The results are fantastically reflective of the human cultural condition.

You kind of like stuff before you were born, you friggen love things from your teen years and by 35 anything new is absolutely terrible.

It is amazing to get some huge datasets that clearly show in amazing clarity the zeitgeist narrative arc of a human's cultural vibe lifespan.

Ok, but this is a strategy newsletter. So let's talk about what makes this interesting insight.

Firstly, I think understandings like this could be very cleverly used by strategists to predict sentiment with good accuracy of particular demographics to certain things.

For example, politicians who are slightly out of touch with some demographics could brush up on their tropes from (insert age group and timeshift offset to certain years of pop culture).

OR if you are a music producer, you could know roughly what year to take some samples from.

OR if you are an investor in collectibles, know what generation is about to enter the workforce and stock up on whatever was massive in their childhood. You have missed the Pokemon card boat.

Nostalgia is one of the most amazing feelings a human can have positive sentiments about. This allows us a little more understanding around such a slippery, hard-to-define thing and a huge interesting insight for me.
