Improved Terrain Loading | SceneForge 0.6.39

Jul 26, 2022 11:50 pm

Hello there !

This is a minor new release but has a change that will be important to your world-building workflow. While this release doesn't merit a devlog video of its own, feel free to take a look at some of the updated demo shorts added to the YouTube Channel -- which just surpassed 100 subscribers!

What's new?

Previously terrain data was saved as three files per scene -- one for the height, texture, and tree data each. This worked, but was frustrating at times simply because it was two more files to manage than before.

Now, the system uses only one TerrainData file per scene, stored in the project's Terrains folder. Additionally, when opening a project in version 0.6.39 for the first time, SceneForge will automatically upgrade you to the new system. This makes file/project organization much simpler, cleaner, and faster to load.

Anything else?

A few performance optimizations were put into place that should "magically" make SceneForge run up to 30% faster on your GPU at times, with little-to-no discernable visual changes.

So many cool new features are in the works and I can't wait to share them all!

If you have any questions, bug reports, feature requests, or feedback, don't hesitate to reply right to this message and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

Thanks for reading!
