Brave Reflections: You don't need a fancy title to be a leader

Hello , my fellow brave human
Can we talk about the word "leader" for a moment?
I've noticed something interesting lately. Whenever I mention leadership, many brilliant people who are actively making waves in their roles, or in their communities immediately say "That's not me." Even 'leaders' I interviewed on my podcast would feel uncomfortable with the term.
Why is this - is it because it equates with status and a salary package? Or is it because a leader conjures something 'other' than who we believe we actually are.
Here's my take on it: if you know your sh*t, give a sh*t, and want to make a difference - I see you as a leader in this changing world, whether you wear that title or not. (Excuse the swearies).
Leadership in my terms isn't only about being the head of an organisation or large teams. Yes, traditionally that may be the case - but also it is those who see what needs to change and want to do something about it whatever the title. It's about that fire in your belly that whispers "things could be different" when others shrug and say "that's just how things are." As someone said to me the other day, "it's an itch that just can't be scratched."
But I do understand. I’ve been there. That fire can feel more a fizzle. Pushing against the status quo is exhausting work, especially when you're doing it alone. Or at least you feel like you are.
But actually you’re not. There are little twinkling lights of people like you dotted all over the place who are feeling exactly the same. Do you not think that is quite exciting?
That's exactly why I'd love for you to join us for two upcoming opportunities:
1. Walk & Talk at Tyninghame Beach on 22nd February - Come meet other amazing humans who, like you, refuse to accept "that's just how things are." Nothing beats connecting face-to-face with people who get it.
2. Our next BE cohort - An intimate group of no more than six people who gather online every two weeks to turn that "something needs to change" feeling into actual change happening. We're talking practical tools, real support, and zero pressure to fit anyone else's definition of leadership.
Remember: The world doesn't need more people with fancy titles. It needs more people who care, and who are fed up with the status quo. Who see what's possible. Who are ready to be the difference they know is needed, but just want a bit of connection and peer support on the way.
Is that you? If you're nodding, then you're already braver than you think.
Reply to this email to save your spot for either (or both!) opportunities. I'd love to have you join us. Or forward this to a friend who you know might be interested.
Here’s to your brilliance.

P.S. For the first half of 2025, against conventional wisdom BE is operating on a Pay As You Can model (guide price: £100/month) because I believe that those who feel called to this work deserve access to it.
