Our First Podcast of 2025 Features Allison Applebaum, PhD
As we enter our 10th anniversary year and kick off an exciting 2025, we're thrilled to bring you another heartfelt and informative episode of the "Untangling Alzheimer's & Dementia" podcast.
In our latest episode, Marianne and Christy sit down with Allison Applebaum, a clinical psychologist specializing in psycho-oncology, founder of the Caregivers Clinic at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and author of the inspiring new book "Stand By Me." Allison's relationship as a caregiver for her father, Stanley Applebaumโan accomplished musician known for arranging the string section of "Stand By Me" and many other memorable songsโadds a touching and practical layer to our conversations. She details her journey of providing care and maintaining her father's dignity and quality of life during his struggle with Lewy Body Disease.
Allison emphasizes the importance of initiating and maintaining open dialogues within caregiver networks. She highlights tools and strategies for discussing care goals, quality of life, and financial planning early on. She also points out the need to continue communicating because circumstances change over time.
We also explore the importance of using inclusive and respectful language in caregiving. We discuss terms like "informal caregiver" and "caretaker," advocating for language that genuinely acknowledges the caregiver's role.
Thank you for being part of the AlzAuthors family. Your support is crucial for our all-volunteer organization. Please consider subscribing, liking, and donating to help us continue to provide valuable resources and foster a supportive community for caregivers everywhere. You are not alone.
Join the conversation and explore more at AlzAuthors.com for resources, events, and support. Let's continue to support each other in this journey of caregiving.

In Case You Missed It . . .
In this deeply personal conversation with Malia Kline, author of "Sisterly Shove: A Fight to Death Against Pancreatic Cancer and Dementia," we discuss her co-caregiving journey for both parents with her cross-country sister, Diane Stinson, a physician. Hosted by Marianne Sciucco and Christy Byrne Yates, with co-host Malika Moore, the conversation covers the emotional and practical realities of coordinating elder care when two very different care philosophies collide.

Join the LEAD Study: Life-Planning in Early Alzheimer's and Other Dementia
From Gerda Sauders, author of Memory's Last Breath: Field Notes on My Dementia:
Peter and I have been participants in a study to create easy-to-use materials to help a person with dementia and their care partner (family member, or anyone involved in their care) prepare end-of life documents. It's with the School of Nursing at the University of Utah. The people from the Nursing School and elsewhere with whom we have worked on this project are wonderfully supportive. They are currently doing at least three studies related to dementia care. For more information please visit The LEAD Study. Thank you.
