One of my oldest friends is running a D&D campaign for some of us old dudes (2nd edition hadn't been released when we started playing) and he said humans only in his campaign. His argument was that no one can imagine what being an elf or dwarf was like. Who knows what being 300 years old is like?
While I understand his point, trying to sort that out is half the fun. I feel current games can get a little weird. Our priest is a bird, our thief is an angel, and our fighter is a samurai rabbit. I get it. A characters need to make sense on some levels. This coming from a guy who writes about Fish Men, Cat Men, and Bull Men.
As a teen, I was fascinated with Richard Knaak's Kaz the Minotaur books. His characters were a wonderful blend of foreign and familiar. Beneath the veneer of whatever race he wrote about was a person. I loved that.
A lot of popular fantasy today steers away from fantasy races (Martin, Abercrombie, Lynch, Sullivan, etc.). Do you enjoy a cast of diverse species like I write, or do you prefer stories grounded in more of an earthly, Arthurian setting? Hit me up: jack@jackandalicia.com I love hearing from you.
Progress
Still cooking. I hit a few speed bumps last week, but I'm still plowing through Act III. The scene I just finished editing is one of the best I've ever written. I know some fellow authors hate this process, but I finally can say I like what I write, even though it needs fixing.
Exciting New Stories!
