Now, for an excerpt from Stalking Shadows:

Jonas was familiar with the Sword Bearers, although he had never been one of their number. Jonas’s father, Ivant II, had often spoken of them. He had never actually voiced disdain for their goals, but labeled them as a symptom of weak leadership. Ivant II, the man who had lost the Kingdom of Ozur, knew something about the dangers of weak leadership.

Jonas knew the secret organization saw its birth in the years leading up to the Battles of Rending. The clandestine institution owed its founding to the abhorrent corruption of the churches of the day and the ineptitude of the crown at the time. Corruption and ineptitude so loathsome that a group of Cavaliers were willing to forsake the letter of their oaths in pursuit of the spirit of their vows. As Jonas understood it, the Sword Bearers either began carrying out their own justice too late, or did not take it far enough. The weakness of the crown, the greed of the churches, and the half measures of those sworn to oppose such things eventually led to the Battles of Rending and what was almost the total destruction of the world.
