THE MONDAY LEADOFF
Hi my friend 🫡
Do we still live in tribes? Seth Godin argues that we do. Here are some of his insights on tribes:
- Every person on the planet wants connection and growth
- You can't have a tribe without a leader - you can't be a leader without a tribe
- To lead, you need the desire to make something happen
- Leadership is not management, it's about creating the change that you believe in
- Leaders must become aware of how the organization works because this awareness allows them to change it
- There's a difference between telling people what to do and inciting a movement
- The anatomy of a movement involves:
1) A narrative that tells a story about who we are and the future we are trying to build (motivate)
2) A connection between and amount the leader and the tribe (connect)
3) Something to do- the fewer the limits, the better (leverage)
- To turn a group into a tribe, you need two things: A shared interest and a way to communicate
- Tribe members want to be part of something that matters
- Whatever the status quo is, changing it allows you to be remarkable

This is something to consider when selecting new team members and hiring assistant coaches.
RULE OF THUMB
(Credit: Albert Mehrabian)
The 7-38-55 Rule indicates that only 7% of all communication is done through verbal communication, the actual words we speak. In contrast, the tone of voice makes up 38% of communication. And 55% of communication comes from the speaker's body language and facial expressions.
WHAT'S BEEN WORKING
1.
Reading
Someone much wiser than I once said, "You should never think twice about purchasing a book." Sage advice. I've been reading a lot more. Some insightful authors I'm learning from are Shane Parrish, James Clear, and Seth Godin.
2.
Utilizing Resources
Does your job offer anything that you are not taking advantage of? The school where I teach provides each teacher with $300 every year for professional development. If you don't use it, you lose it. I just ordered $200 worth of books. I've talked to many coworkers who don't use this money year after year. Why not spend the money on personal development if it's there? Zero downside.

P.S. The stories you tell yourself determine your inner voice. Your inner voice determines your destiny.
