TL:DR

What's Up in FabianSpace

This is a newsy one because I have a lot going on in July. In fact, I’m writing this in June because I don’t think I’ll have time until the end of the month, and even then, I’m not sure. My dad is heading to Colorado for his high school class reunion, and Mom is coming to stay with us. It’ll be the first time in four years that he’s been away from her for more than hour.

Worldbuilding Basics

I’m teaching again. I decided to dust off my many webinars and start offering them. First up: Worldbuilding Basics, 27 Jul, 8:00 PM

Whether you're writing science fiction or a boy-next-door coming-of-age story, a well-built and well-told world will keep your readers engaged. I’ll discuss the major dos and don’ts, where to get ideas, and the like. It’s been a popular workshop at conferences and mentoring sessions. At the end, I’ll take questions. The cost is $20 and it’s held via webinar. Limit: 25 students.

Author Highlight: John Olsen

This month, I'm interviewing a friend and fellow sci-fi author, John Olsen. Funny thing - he and I both have books titled, "Discovery," and they both include miners. Of course, his story is vastly different from mine:

Discovery (Polecat Protocol Book 1) by [John M. Olsen]Mining a tiny moon in a remote star system has its challenges. At the top of the list: If the power dies, the crew dies.

Jericho Jackson looks forward to finishing one last job: a high-risk, high-pay mining gig. A string of disasters throws the operation into life-threatening chaos as his team loses contact with their orbital support station. They will have to use all their specialized training to stay alive.

Shanna Percival, his teammate and one-time girlfriend, keeps their equipment in top shape, but her tendency to tinker and stick her nose where it doesn’t belong turns up a mysterious cache of data that shouldn’t exist.

Knowledge is power. Her discovery could be the ultimate key to overcoming the growing danger, but time is running out …

Interview with John:

1. What's your favorite part of this book?

I liked putting together the way the science works, and how it all plays into how the plot and character growth work. I went for a hard science fiction vibe, but with some space-opera feel on the human side of the story. There's even an appendix of all the cool stuff I had to research to write the story. This comes into play in a big way at the climax of the story where the space miners surprise the bad guys with a science-based twist.

2. What's the best compliment you've gotten about this book?

I love to hear about readers' favorite characters. One reader was having a hard time deciding which secondary character was their favorite but liked Grant because he's got a lot of character as a sidekick.

3. Tell us what's next for you and/or the characters.

Their adventures continue in books 2 (Breakdown) and 3 (Convergence) of the Polecat Protocol series. The series is complete, so I'm outlining a new science fiction series that will keep me busy for a long time, and I write short stories for a wide range of publications and contests.
