TL:DR

·        Went to Puerto Rico on a Lumbert Family Vacay

·        Good Intentions: A DragonEye Novella

·        Sins of the Brother: A DragonEye Story

What’s New in FabianSpace

I spent last week in Puerto Rico. My dad decided for my mom’s 84th birthday, that we should go see her family. My sister came from Texas, but we left spouses and kids behind. It was a Lumbert Family vacation.

I have to admit I had some trepidations. My mom’s dementia is pretty advanced, and she’s refusing to eat, so she was weak for the trip. I’d not seen my relatives in 14 years. Spanish is super rusty, and all mixed up with Italian and Japanese and a little Portuguese (also all rusty). I’m not great with languages, anyway.

As soon as we got there, all the worries went away, and we were swept up in family love. My cousins took my sister and me out to eat, and my cousin Cano took Dad out for rides while Mom stuck around with my Tio Wachy and Tia Daisy. Tia Daisy loves to cook and kept Mom nibbling all week. We had a huge birthday party with 28 relatives, music and dancing, then the last night went to see the flamenco dancers in Old San Juan. My mother came alive and almost stormed the stage!

This may be the last trip like this my mom will be able to make, and she’s already forgetting that it happened, but I know it lives in her heart. It certainly lives in mine.

More DragonEye!

I’ve been looking over some of the older Vern stories that I have rights to and am polishing them for republishing. Stay tuned for these stories.

Good Intentions: A DragonEye Novella

Good Intentions is a novella that was a serial story in Midnight Diner in 2014. It’s perfect for after Siren Spell and before Idol Speculations, which is the next Vern novel. (Though, it may be a novella, too. You can put only so many words into Vern vs Godzilla.)

This is one of Vern’s more noirish stories, so low on humor, high on mystery and angst. I hadn’t read it since it came out and had forgotten how it ended. It’s a wonderful feeling when one of my stories can still bring tears to my eyes. A bittersweet yet satisfying ending. You’ll also get to meet some new characters, including the dwarves that will build Vern’s dream lair in Idol Speculations.

I’m expecting to publish in June, after a couple of beta readers have had a stab at it. I’m making my own cover, as I often do with the shorter versions (unless there’s something I cannot manage).

Sins of the Brother

I wanted to explore Corsican Twins, where if something happens to one, the other feels it. What if one was all good and the other all sin? Like Good Intentions, it’s not a funny Vern. (One thing I love about Vern is that he can be grim as well as hilarious.) This one will come out as soon as Dawn Grimes can get me a cover. I know exactly what I want, but don’t have the skills to create it.

Don’t worry! Idol Speculations is proceeding apace. It may be September or October for the release date, but there are more Vern stories to keep you going in the meantime!
