TL:DR

·        New endeavor for my Catholic writing friends

·        Comprehensive list of all the episodes I’ve parodied in Space Traipse: Hold My Beer

What’s New in FabianSpace

Because I don’t do enough in my life, I decided to start a new endeavor in support of the Catholic Writers Guild. As you know, I helped found it and while I don’t want to lead it, I do try to contribute to its growth in small ways as much as I can. I decided that one way I could do that is to create an inspirational book to give to its members.

The idea came from a long-running book series Three Minutes A Day, which are simple inspirational Christian stories. It got me thinking about all the inspirational stories I’ve heard from other writers about how God had guided them or others they know in their writing. I could gather 366 stories (one a day including Feb 29), publish them, and both donate the book to the Guild as a gift for members and sell it on Amazon with the profits going to the Guild.

Catholic writing friends: Do you have an inspirational story about how God has affected you in your writing career, or do you have a story about another writer or saint you’d like to share? Find the guidelines here.

(Why Catholic only? It’s a target audience issue. I want stories about saint writers, intercessions, etc., which might not make the book palatable for Protestant readers.)

Space Traipse: Hold My Beer  What have I parodied?

Space Traipse is all about science fiction parody, and I do look at specific plots to incorporate my characters into, taking what I feel were the worst decisions and rethinking them the way common-sense rednecks would. Or sometimes, it’s a great episode, but I saw a character in the lead role making things go very differently.

Here’s my tally so far:

Doall’s Do-Over: ST: The Animated Series “Yesteryear”

ST:HMB Season 1

·        “Best Laid Plans of Vegetation and Cybernetic Beings”: Every episode where they ferried someone to get married who didn’t want to be married. Also, the Borg.

·        “Polarity Panic”: Every science fiction story where humans have an uncanny understanding of alien engineering.

·        “Foot in the Door”: Based on a joke in Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, about a planet that was so conservation-conscious that you had to leave with the exact same body mass that you came with.

·        “Day in the Life”: You know those filler episodes where a side character we never see again gives us a different view of what’s going on? Only Janbot was so fun, he came back in style.

·        “Rest Stop”: ST: The Original Series “Shore Leave”

ST:HMB Season 2

·        “Lone Star”: Jeb is Texan; I had to do Dallas.

·        “Amock Time”: ST: The Original Series “Amok Time”

·        “The No Brainer”: This one was inspired by a Tumblr post that said humans were the only species crazy enough to tie two warp cores together, toss them into a star, and see what happens. It’s the post that inspired the series.

·        “Ad Astra”: Rob and I saw the movie and were so disappointed that one the way home, we came up with this movie review in Space Traipse style.

ST:HMB Season 3

·        “Trouble in Filedise”: This one is fully original to continue the Space Traipse main storyline.

·        “Phantom of the Cybersphere”: How many times did Troi (ST: The Next Generation) get brain-napped? Plus, Phantom of the Opera!

·        “Kippers and Chaos”: ST: The Next Generation “The Empath”

ST:HMB Season 4

·        “Love is Many Stars”: Again, original for the storyline.

·        “Captain’s Cage Match”: ST: The Original Series “Arena”

·        “Naked Impulse”: ST: The Original Series “Naked Time” and ST: The Next Generation “Naked Now”

ST:HMB Season 5

·        “Journey to Belon”: ST: The Original Series “Journey to Babel”

·        “Day Before Tomorrow”: Every Groundhog Day/time loop episode ever!

·        “They Left the Duck Blind On”: ST: The Next Generation “Who Watches the Watchers”

ST:HMB Season 6

·        “The Highest Form of Motivation”: ST: The Next Generation “The Best of Both Worlds” but only very loosely. Loreli wanted to be a hero in her own amazing way.

·        “Doall’s Brain”: ST: The Original Series “Spock’s Brain”

·        “Sugar and Spice”: ST: The Original Series “What Are Little Girls Made Of”

·        “Motherclucker”: ST: The Original Series “Devil in the Dark”

Coming in ST:HMB Season 7: “They Grow So Fast”: ST: The Next Generation “The Child”
