What’s New in FabianSpace

I had the chance to do some virtual appearances this past month. One was a quickie on Cath-Lit Live with Amy Cattapan. I talked a little about Siren Spell, but we didn’t have time to get into all the gleeful ways I torture Vern by making him human. (I love that book so much!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJ_wuYXG9y4&list=PLRr3ezDdXeuJfb_PnfMcp3HsBW0cmgurQ&index=1

The other was for WCAT TV and radio. I got to talk about the Rescue Sisters short stories. I also read the beginning of a couple of the stories. It was a good time. The hostess, Cynthia Toolin, was lovely. You can see it here. (Or listen to it while doing housework or something. It’s a bit long. Plus, I also feel like I look awkward. It’s so weird to try to look into the camera instead of the interviewer’s face on my screen.) https://youtu.be/56ZtA7rFuco

I also took back my Mind Over series. It was time. I ADORE everything DragonMoon did with the books, from the covers to the layout, but they’ve not been selling in a very long time, and it just doesn’t make sense for them or me to keep me on the rolls. There’s another editor interested, but otherwise, I’ll be looking for covers and self-publishing them just to get them back out there. I reread them, and they are definitely 1990s, but the story is still so good! Stay tuned!

Space Traipse: Hold My Beer 6 Behind the Stories

This week, I’m going to give you a little behind-the-scenes about two of the stories in Space Traipse 6. I love telling these, but if I am boring you, please tell me what you want to see in these newsletters! (I’m doing this to generate interest, after all, not hear myself type, lol.)

The Highest Form of Motivation

It all started with killing off Loreli.

Which I did not intend to do. I only wanted to kill off Doc Guy. From the very beginning, I wanted Doc Guy to die a common, non-heroic death. That’s why he was such a common, non-heroic character. (“Guy” is even a nod to Crewman Guy in Galaxy Quest, who was sure he would die because his character didn’t have a last name.) But when as “Trouble in Filedise” progressed, it became clear that he would not die alone – Loreli would have to go with him.

My sister had a few words to say about that. Loreli was her favorite character and I’d crushed her! Well, disintegrated her in to a bazillion thread-level pieces, but potay-to, potah-to. So I promised her I’d find a way to bring her back…eventually.

Naturally, the Cybers had to be involved, which meant a Loqutus-style rescue, Impulsive-style. Only Loreli didn’t like that, either. Unlike Guy, she could be uncommon and heroic. And so she was.

I won’t give away spoilers, but let’s just say Enigo is having a hard time coping with the new Loreli…but it will be worth it.

Sugar and Spice

As usual, when a book seems too short, I go watch old Star Treks for inspiration. I try to bring in side characters, too, because they never get enough air time and I love them so.

So when I saw, “What Little Girls Are Made Of,” I felt called to parody, but with whom? Leslie is too much a free spirit, and I don’t have as many female characters who can play a romantic role. Ensign Misha Rosien, however, turned out to be perfect. She has just the right amount of timidity and spunk to take the part of Nurse Chapel as the fiancé.

Of course, she’s not Chapel, and as I wrote, she let me know:

1.      It was an arranged match – yep, a Jewish matchmaker!

2.      She was younger and a lot more passive – something she outgrew in HuFleet.

3.      She was no longer so interested in her former fiancé – especially now that he was getting creepy and aggressive.

This made it so much more fun. Jeb was great to write in the Kirk role, too. He was so annoyed.

Unlike actors, my characters don’t have agents, so they depend on me to give them more pages. They depend on you, too. Is there a character you would like to read a story or novel about? Email me and let me know!

karina@fabianspace.com It doesn’t even have to be a Space Traipse character.

I promise to ask them to tell me a story, and we’ll see what they tell me.
