Gapman Fun
It's been a while since I shared from my work-in-progress, Gapman. He's the superhero no one knew they needed and the pain-in-the-tail-padawan Vern never wanted. Here's where Vern and Gapman first meet:
I caught music floating on the wind. "Kryptonite" by 3 Doors Down. Sheesh, could he be more obvious? I turned my nose toward the east side. By the time I caught up to him, Rob Zombie was howling through Gapman's earpods.
There were so many ways I could do this, but even half-again pay isn't compensation enough. I was going to have fun. I swooped under him, almost brushing his superbelly with my spikes.
"Yeeargh!" he cried, accent and heroic demeanor forgotten. He jerked upward, arms pinwheeling and legs flailing. Yep. Very heroic.
"What do you call a superhero who loses his balance at 2,000 feet?"
"What are you doing?" he cried.
I snorted derisively. "That the best you got, Gapman? Where’s your accent?"
He glided toward me, hands out placatingly. "Have I done something to offend you?" With the accent, I might add.
I corkscrewed around him head to feet, then pushed on his boot so that he spun horizontally until he was facing me again. He recovered faster this time, even letting out a very British, “Oi!”.
"Offensive? Know what's offensive? A pretender on my turf!"
"'Pretender'? Take it back!" he yelled.
I tried not to laugh. I'd seen the comment "die die die pretender" on one of the MeTube videos of him. It didn't matter that it was signed by some costumed joke named "Fuscia Raccoon" from Pasadena. I knew the name would hurt.
"Don’t like it, Pretender? Then show me what you've got!"
"Bring it!" he shouted, then sped toward me.
I twisted and grabbed him with my tail before he went zooming into the sunset.
"Gotta do better than that!" I teased, then released him and sped away, muscles and magic straining until the buildings were a blur and the highway lines merged into one long streak. I flew low and headed toward the nearest mountains, following the curvy road at top speed.
I had to give him credit; he caught up to me as Rob Zombie gave way to Soulja Boy. I braked hard and snagged his iPod as he flew past.
"Hey!" He banked and came round for another pass, arm out. A passing semi blared its horn, even though Gapman missed him by feet. Still, I added situational awareness to my list.
I flapped to the right while I used my tail to flip through his favorites. " Does your mother know you listen to that?"
Surprise made him stop instead of pressing his advantage. Not that he had an advantage, but still; it's the principle. We'd have to work on that. "What's wrong with 'Superman'?"
"Other than he's using it as a verb? 'Danger Zone!' There's a song worth flying to."
"Give it back!"
I shrugged. "No problem. Ready to catch?"
His face clouded with self-doubt, but he held his hands out like a baseball player.
I let it drop, then shot straight up into the air.
"Gah!" He dove after it.
"Three dimensions! You have to think in three dimensions!" I shouted as I folded my wings and dove after him. Just before we hit the trees, I snagged the phone with my claw and yanked his earbuds off with my tail.
His yelp turned into a cry of pain as he and the local foliage got close.
Ouch! He Gapmaned that birch.
