What’s New in FabianSpace
My high school drama teacher told us there are no small parts, only small actors. I think my characters know this, too. So often in my writing, I’ll bring in a secondary character to accomplish something in a scene, and they will insist that they have more to do with the story than I knew! Usually, they end up stealing a scene and forging a place in readers’ hearts. With Idol Speculations, I think there are two: Clara the Goose and Momzilla.
Clara entered the scene because I wanted a small side case for Vern and Sister Grace to handle while stuff happened in the background. She’s the goose that laid golden eggs—only, it wasn’t gold and they weren’t eggs. But a goose with di-aureate-a was too much fun to limit, so Vern and Grace ended up keeping her, much to Vern’s chagrin.
In this story, the dwarves build a mountain that holds an amusement park and Vern’s new home. Momzilla, or Lina Wutherton was only supposed to be a nameless woman who was complaining about Vern’s new mountain lair getting in the way of her view of the real mountains. But when a college student is killed by Shogzallie, she let me know that was her boy and she wanted revenge. That turned out to be a fun couple of chapters. Never underestimate the power of a grieving mom with a car full of sports equipment!
Next Worldbuilding Workshop Aug 28, 8 pm Eastern
I had a terrific time presenting Worldbuilding Basics last month. Thanks to those who attended! This month, I’m teaching 6 ways to build your worlds. We’ll look at some easy ways that worlds can be developed and cover the basics for presenting a world. This is a one-hour webinar with questions and a handout. $20. (If you are a member of the CWG, email me for the coupon code.)
How to Publish on Amazon – class and demo
The last couple of times I’ve published a book on Amazon, I held a webinar to show folks how it’s done. I’ve had great response and decided to formalize it into a class. I’ll cover what you need to prepare, some of the basics, and then walk you through a demo, using Idol Speculations as the guinea pig! You’ll leave with an understanding of how to publish using KDP (Amazon’s platform) and a worksheet to help you prepare.
$10 (CWG members contact me for a coupon code.)
Idol Speculations comes out Aug 29!
It’s the faceoff you never knew you wanted—Vern vs. Godzilla!
When Japanese investors want Vern as the mascot and protector of their new commercial center in Los Lagos, Vern thinks he’s got it made. Finally, the respect he deserves, a cushy job patrolling the store area and amusement park, and a new lair built into the artificial mountain!
But nothing is ever easy in Vern’s world. When an elder god that’s been hiding in the lakes of Los Lagos, grows under the inadvertent influence of Mundanes, it emerges as a monster out of a kaiju movie. Vern gets the help of mages, the national guard, and even a Mechadragon, but in the end, it’s up to Vern to save the day.
Can a dragon the tenth the size of a monster take on a god powered by cliché?
You can watch me load it live on Aug 29 in the How to Publish on Amazon class. Also, to celebrate, I’ll be giving everyone some coloring pages, courtesy of my artist friend Brent Donobo! (You don't need to do anything - just watch for the link in an upcoming newsletter!)
