When gear doesn’t really matter

Hey there.
I get a lot of YouTube comments that go something like this:
“I want to do YouTube, but all I’ve got is my phone…”
“I have a phone, but I need a better camera...”
Or one of my favorites:
“No way will I use my phone to shoot videos!”
Not sure where you fall on the “better gear” thinking but if you are believing the false belief that you need something “better than a phone” to do YouTube video, then read on.
Even though I have a background in TV production, I've never understood the bias against using a phone. And not just “until I can buy a real camera…” but as a REAL camera.
I’m not sure where the idea ever came from that the only way to do YouTube videos, or video in general, is to use something other than a smartphone.
Do you know that even older iPhones can shoot better video, yeah even 4k, better than some “real cameras”?
Even though I have several “real cameras” (sarcasm implied), I still do a lot with my iPhone because it can do a lot! I don’t need lenses or SD cards or a bunch of other things I do need with my Canon cameras.
Consider this.
Danny Boyle, Hollywood Director of countless movies including one of my favorites 28 Days Later just produced the sequel 28 Years Later and he shot the entire movie on an iPhone 15 Pro Max.
Check out the trailer which was also shot on an iPhone 👉 watch trailer.
Your message is way more important than how you created it. If you need more convincing, I encourage you to watch this video and you’ll see what I mean.
If you’re ready to do YouTube, to share your gifts with video, please do not let “just having a phone” stop you from creating.
Oh, if you want some ideas about smartphone video accessories, I got you covered 👉 here.
Keep creating.
