🤸♂️ Understanding Your Complete Blood Count
Jan 06, 2025 1:01 pm
Hey
Last week, we explored your Complete Blood Count (CBC). This week, we’re moving on to another essential blood test: the Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP), also known as a Chem-7 or Chem-12. This panel offers a detailed look into your body's internal chemistry, providing insights into various organ functions and overall metabolic health.
Key Markers & What They Reveal
The CMP assesses several crucial markers:
Glucose
- Functional Range: 77–88 mg/dL
- High levels may suggest prediabetes or diabetes, while low levels could be related to certain medications or medical conditions. Optimal glucose levels are essential for energy production and overall metabolic health.
Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN)
- Functional Range: 9.4–16.94 mg/dL
- Elevated BUN often signals impaired kidney function. Low levels may point to liver disease or malnutrition.
Creatinine
- Functional Range (Male): 0.79–1.01 mg/dL | (Female): 0.67–1.01 mg/dL
- Reflects kidney function. High levels can indicate reduced kidney function or dehydration.
Sodium (Na⁺)
- Functional Range: 140–144 mmol/L
- An essential electrolyte for fluid balance. Abnormal levels might lead to dehydration or muscle issues.
Potassium (K⁺)
- Functional Range: 4.0–4.5 mmol/L
- Vital for nerve and muscle function. Imbalances can cause heart problems or muscle weakness.
Chloride (Cl⁻)
- Functional Range: 100–105 mmol/L
- Maintains fluid balance and proper cellular functions.
Carbon Dioxide (CO₂)
- Functional Range: 23–27 mmol/L
- Reflects acid-base balance in your blood. Abnormal levels may indicate respiratory or metabolic concerns.
Calcium (Ca²⁺)
- Functional Range: 9.6–10.4 mg/dL
- Crucial for bone health, muscle function, and nerve signaling.
Albumin
- Functional Range: 4.0–4.5 g/dL
- A liver-produced protein. Low levels may hint at liver disease or kidney issues.
Phosphorous
- Functional Range: 3.7–4.3 mg/dL
- Essential for energy production, bone health, and cellular functions.
Total Protein
- Functional Range: 6.9–7.2 g/dL
- Indicates the total amount of protein in your blood.
Anion Gap
- Functional Range: 7–12 mmol/L
- Helps diagnose metabolic acidosis and electrolyte imbalances.
