This week, we’re exploring the Iron Panel, a crucial test for assessing your body’s ability to transport oxygen and maintain energy levels. Iron is a key nutrient, and imbalances can lead to fatigue, weakness, and other health issues.

Key Markers & Functional Ranges

Serum Iron

  • Functional Range: 78.21–122.91 µg/dL​
  • Reflects the amount of circulating iron in your blood. Low levels may indicate iron deficiency, while high levels could suggest conditions like hemochromatosis.


TIBC (Total Iron Binding Capacity)

  • Functional Range: 250–320 µg/dL​
  • Indicates the blood’s capacity to bind and transport iron. Elevated levels often point to iron deficiency.


Transferrin Saturation

  • Functional Range: 25–30%​
  • Shows the percentage of transferrin saturated with iron. Low levels may signal iron deficiency anemia, while high levels could indicate iron overload.


Ferritin

  • Functional Range: 50–100 ng/mL​
  • A marker of iron storage in your body. Low ferritin levels are often the earliest indicator of iron deficiency.


What This Means for You


Iron plays a vital role in oxygen transport and energy production. Imbalances can cause symptoms like fatigue, shortness of breath, or dizziness. Monitoring these markers ensures your iron levels are optimal for maintaining energy and vitality.


How to Support Healthy Iron Levels

  • For Low Iron Levels: Include iron-rich foods like red meat, leafy greens, and fortified cereals. Vitamin C enhances iron absorption.
  • For High Iron Levels: Limit intake of iron supplements and consider donating blood if appropriate (consult your healthcare provider).
