The Balance Between Dream and Default

Jan 02, 2025 9:26 am

The right strategy is good enough to land Dream Jobs and bad enough to filter out Dead Ends.

The perfect strategy isn’t always ideal.

I used to aim for it:

• Perfect resumes.

• Big portfolios with every project I’d ever done.

• Over-the-top promises in my outreach.

Sure, I got a lot of interviews.

But I also got overwhelmed, chasing roles that weren’t a fit.

I ended up with rejection emails and interviews that went nowhere. Or worse, roles that looked good on the outside but drained me on the inside.

Then I switched.

But I went too far the other way:

I only focused on the “perfect” Dream Companies.

I had a few great wins—roles that paid well and aligned with my values.

But I was missing out on a lot of other opportunities that could have been just as fulfilling.

I spread myself too thin chasing everything and everyone.

I limited myself by aiming too high, too fast.

But finding the balance brought me clarity, results, and sanity.

The same goes for you.

Your approach to job hunting requires balance:

• Enough focus to target Dream Jobs.

• Enough flexibility to keep other doors open.

This balance isn’t static—it’s a process.

It’s why I’ve refined the UX Careerpreneur Model again and again to find the right strategy. It’s why I teach you how to tweak your Minimum Valuable Pitch and portfolio until it attracts the roles you want—and filters out the ones you don’t.

Right now, you can grab the tools to find your balance inside The UX Careerpreneur Xmas Store.
