How to Escape the Feast-or-Famine Cycle for Good 💸

Let me guess. One month you’re raking in cash, booking clients left and right, feeling like you’ve cracked the code to solopreneur life. The next? You’re refreshing your inbox, wondering if your internet is broken because surely this many people can’t be ignoring you.

Been there. Lived it. Hated it.

The Cycle That Nearly Broke Me

In the early years of my business, back when I traded time for money, it felt like I was constantly riding a financial rollercoaster with no seatbelt.

Some months, I’d be fully booked, convinced I was on my way to the solopreneur hall of fame. Then—like clockwork—those busy months would be followed by… nothing. Nada. Crickets. A solid month (or two) of wondering how many meals I could get out of a can of tuna fish.

And the worst part? It was my own fault.

Here’s how I was sabotaging myself:

👉 I’d market like crazy, land a bunch of clients, and get swamped with work.

👉 Because I was busy, I’d stop marketing (who has time for that when you’re drowning in deadlines?).

👉 Then—surprise, surprise!—when those projects wrapped up, I’d look around and realize…

👉 I had zero new leads. Cue the panic.

👉 Rinse and repeat until exhaustion took over.

It took me way too long to realize the problem wasn’t bad luck or a slow economy—it was the way I was running my business.

Breaking Free: How I Stopped the Feast-or-Famine Cycle

These days? I don’t live like that anymore. That’s not to say things are always predictable (this is business, not a 9-to-5 paycheck), but I don’t have those wild swings where I go from â€œI’m rich!” to “Guess I’ll be eating ramen for a week.”

Here’s what changed everything:

🔥 1. I Stopped Trading Time for Money

Billable hours were killing my business. The moment I switched to value-based pricing, everything got easier. Instead of getting paid for how long something took, I started pricing based on expertise, impact, and results.

Translation: I stopped feeling like I had to chain myself to my desk for 40 hours a week just to justify my rates.

📣 2. I Made Marketing a Weekly Non-Negotiable

Listen, I get it—when you’re swamped with client work, the last thing you want to do is market yourself. But here’s the deal:

🚨 If you only market when you’re desperate for clients, you’ll always be desperate for clients.

Now, I have specific time set aside every single week to work on my business, no matter how busy I am. Because if my business doesn’t get some love, it will eventually ghost me.

💡 3. I Built in Recurring Revenue

For the longest time, I had zero predictable income. Everything was one-and-done projects—meaning every month started at $0 unless I hustled my face off.

Now? I have services and digital products that bring in income without me constantly hunting for new clients.

Some ideas to create steadier income:

✔️ Monthly retainers for ongoing work.

✔️ Digital products that sell in the background.

✔️ Training or memberships that keep money coming in.

The key? Not relying on “new clients” as your only source of revenue.

🔄 4. I Stopped Putting All My Eggs in One Marketing Basket

At one point, 90% of my leads came from one platform. (Psst: That was a terrible strategy.)

Now, I have multiple ways people find me—my newsletter, blog, referrals, digital products, and (begrudgingly) LinkedIn.

Because when one marketing stream slows down, another one keeps things moving.

The Bottom Line

Solopreneurship will always have highs and lows, but you don’t have to be trapped in feast-or-famine mode forever.

If you’re sick of the income whiplash, start here:

✔️ Rework your pricing so you’re paid for results, not just hours.

✔️ Commit to marketing every week (even when you’re busy).

✔️ Create recurring revenue so you’re not always starting from zero.

✔️ Diversify your lead sources so you’re not dependent on one thing.

This isn’t about hustling more—it’s about building a business that works for you, not one that runs you into the ground.

Let’s Talk: What’s Your Biggest Income Struggle Right Now?

I’d love to hear from you! Hit reply and tell me: What’s been your biggest challenge when it comes to creating steady income?

Or, if you’ve already escaped the feast-or-famine cycle, what helped you get there?

Here’s to more ‘I got this’ and less ‘Welp, time to panic market again.
