The difference between computer science and software engineering

Hey ,

One of the most common questions I get is, "what's the difference between computer science and software engineering?"

🤔 Depending on how experienced the person asking is, this can actually be a really difficult question to answer.

But I've tried my best to summarize it here:

👀 In short:

  • computer science: more broad, heavier emphasis on math
  • software engineering: focused on practices to create software efficiently, usually more about logic than computations

This difference is actually part of why Leetcode-style interviews are so controversial. I can tell you from experience, most of the coding I do at work wouldn't have required a computer science degree.
