Dread winter training?
Nov 11, 2024 8:31 am
You know that feeling when the weather turns cold and you immediately dread the impact on your training?
I've definitely been there before. But this week, I had a bit of an epiphany that I just had to share with you.
In the spirit of Movember, I decided to challenge myself. The goal? Run 60 km throughout November to raise awareness for male suicide prevention. Sounds intense, right?
I kicked off the week with a quick 5 km run at the gym. Nothing too crazy, just getting the ball rolling. But then came Sunday, and that's when the magic happened.
Picture this: It's 7 am on a crisp Sunday morning in London. I'm lacing up my running shoes, ready to tackle a 10 km run around Battersea Park. As I step outside, the air is cool and crisp, and the park is practically empty.
(30 km now done for Movember if you wanted an update)
Pure bliss.
As I started running, memories came flooding back. I used to do this every Sunday with my buddy Pete - just an hour of running, chatting, and enjoying each other's company. And you know what? It felt amazing to revisit that routine.
But the thing is, as cyclists, we sometimes get so caught up in our specific training routines that we forget about the value of cross-training.
Especially during those winter months when the weather isn't exactly bike-friendly.
Running, particularly at a steady, conversational pace (what we call Zone 2), can be an excellent way to maintain your cardiovascular fitness when cycling outdoors isn't an option. It's simple, it's effective, and dare I say, it can be incredibly enjoyable.
This experience reminded me of something crucial: the importance of adapting our training, especially during winter. It's so easy to push ourselves too hard, trying to maintain the same intensity we had during summer. But here's a little secret - it's okay to switch things up.
Don't be afraid to adapt your training in the winter.
Focus more on the process and enjoying it, rather than pushing yourself too hard and risking illness.
Remember, consistency trumps intensity every time. By maintaining a regular, enjoyable routine, you're setting yourself up for a strong return to cycling when the weather improves.
Winter training doesn't have to be a chore. It can be an opportunity to explore different forms of exercise and to maintain your fitness in new and exciting ways.
Who knows?
You might even discover a new passion along the way.
Speaking of passions, I've got something exciting to share with you.
The Cycle Lean Collective is now open for new members, and we're offering a free 28-day trial. It's the perfect way to stay motivated and connected with like-minded cyclists throughout the winter months.
