Defending Your Identity Nails You to the Cross

You are not who you think you are.
Let me say that again. You are not who you think you are. Your identity—your name, your beliefs, your preferences, all the things you like and dislike—that all comes together to form who you think yourself to be. But here's what happens: your beliefs start making your life harder. You're presented with something and your identity creates massive resistance in the moment. The question is, can you feel the resistance within your heart and be with it as it occurs?
Here's the thing about defending who you think you are—it keeps you stuck. You're nailing yourself to the cross. You learn through letting life show you. You don't learn through demanding for life to be a certain way. When you're able to be present in the moment and feel your own friction or resistance as it arises, there isn't anything to defend because you're free. When you're free, you flow. You let the current guide you.
Alan Watts said if you try to hold onto the water, you cannot swim. The swimming is a releasing and letting the water carry you. But of course you still have to move with the water. That's the dance. You can't hold it unless you have a cup. But then the waves can crash extremely hard. The riptides. The whirlpools. They create such power. But all simultaneously the water can be calm and peaceful. It is of that same essence which you are. That is how the spirit works.
You cannot always be defending who you think yourself to be because then you are holding on to the rock. And if you're holding onto the rock, then you never let go, and then the river can't guide you. Of course, you do need to ground yourself. If you're not strong enough mentally, spiritually, to have the faith and confidence to let go of the rock, then you'll never give yourself a chance to learn how to flow. So you need balance. Tie the camel. Simple nutrition, meditation, stretching. Keep the vessel strong, be aligned. But then let go. Learn to be guided.
Understand that you don't need to have all the answers. But the answers of wisdom are only going to be heard as you are doing your best. That means logically your best. And that invites the spirit into your life. When you stop defending and start flowing, everything changes.
