Intending Peace for All
Oct 20, 2023 12:14 am
If you have been reading my emails, you are aware of the many benefits of the Sufi moving meditation practice we do every Friday morning. The slow breath and movement, for example, calm the nervous system by relaxing the mind while releasing muscular tension. Add Adnan's shamanic drumming, chanting, and dance, and you have the recipe for achieving a profound state of inner peace.

Are you aware that it is possible to transmit your state of peace and well-being to others? The combined higher vibrations of many people doing spiritual practice simultaneously can uplift the lower vibrations of others worldwide. By setting intentions and directing the energy to a particular situation we can produce an even more powerful effect. Certainly, there are many people who would benefit from such a transmission.
Do you recall the controlled study of 1993, which tested the effect of prayer on the crime rate in Washington DC? A group practice of Transcendental Meditation resulted in a stunning 48% reduction in the city's crime rate throughout the study. (see: Effects of Group Practice of the Transcendental Meditation Program on Preventing Violent Crime in Washington, DC: Results of the National Demonstration Project, June-July 1993 -- John S. Hagelin, Maxwell V. Rainforth, David W. Orme-Johnson, Kenneth L. Cavanaugh, Charles N. Alexander, Susan F. Shatkin, John L. Davies, Anne O. Hughes, and Emanuel Ross
While a single study can not be called proof of the power of prayer, it is worth remembering as we set our own healing intentions.
The Dawn
Every day I send a prayer of healing to a list of friends and family members struggling with various health issues. Does it help? How can one know for sure? Yet, I would say yes because I can't imagine such a consistent expression of love failing to be of benefit.
I have read and listened to many anecdotal reports concerning the power of prayer and I'm confident that we can help through our meditation practice, in particular, by chanting.
The chants we use in the Sufi meditation class are Arabic names for God (or if you prefer, "the Divine.") These words translate into the English equivalents of healing, mercy, compassion, wisdom, guidance, insight, contentment, the release of negativity, and more. When we chant one of these words in a group, the energy is magnified. Direct this energy at a specific result and we concentrate its impact.
The Return of Light
The world's people are at a crossroads. I hope you will join me tomorrow, Friday, October 20th at 9 am for our regular Sufi Moving Meditation and bring your intentions for healing those who need our help. If you cannot join in person, I hope you will join in spirit and send your own message of peace.
