Surrendering to Change
Jan 12, 2025 2:16 am
The fires in Los Angeles have been eating through the city and surrounding areas since Tuesday. It is a tragedy beyond comprehension and a harsh reminder that life can change overnight.
A Buddhist friend once said, “Everything changes, everything is impermanent.”
The mind resists change of this magnitude. W can not cannot comprehend it. Like Hiroshima or the fall of World Trade Towers, it seems impossible, too horrible to believe. We watch a video of the devastation on TV over and over. Like a movie, it doesn’t seem real.
Spirit understands because it knows that this human life is temporary. Spirit is the way we can support our bodies in processing this event. In the moment, there is peace and acceptance.
In my Facebook video yesterday, I spoke of three things we can do to navigate change.
First, we must surrender to what is and what is not. Safety is not guaranteed. Life is not guaranteed. Things staying the same is an illusion. Change is a prime feature of human life. Our bodies change, as do our capacities, who we live with, what we eat, what we do, and how we think. Everything is changing all the time.
Surrender means letting go, releasing the resistance of our body and mind. Let go of thoughts and relax our muscles.
Fight is one of the automatic responses of the body when it feels threatened. In fight mode, our muscles clench, and our mind resists.
Spiritual practice eases fear and fight.
Breath is the first action of surrender. Breathe in and out, deep and slow. With each exhale, release resistance. With each inhale, breathe in peace and calm. Surrender!
The second thing is to research the situation. What is this? Be curious. How can you help? What are you called to do?
When we do spiritual practice, we tap into our creative intuition. We tap into the collective genius of Source.
We might ask Spirit:
- How is this event for me?
- What am I to learn?
- How might I respond?
In this way, we find answers to change and a way forward.
Surrender is not giving up. It is not putting your trust in some leader or guru to show you the way.
Adnan often said to us, “Do not trust me, trust the work.”
Instead of surrender, he used the word submission . . .
The best way of submission is through spirit and consciousness. When you submit to the Spirit, you become free because Spirit has no boundary, no limit, no law, and no roots. It is the freedom of existence.
Once you do that you will have faith. Faith is very important. You will grow if you have faith in yourself, any of your actions, and your work. When people have no faith, they enter a state of no determination. Faith brings hope. The hope of the moment is strength.
Join me tomorrow, Sunday, January 5th at 8:00 am PDT or Tuesday, January 7 at 10:30 am PDT, and connect with Spirit. We can chant Yah Sha Fi and create healing energy for those impacted by the fire and ourselves.
