The Healthful Articulation of Belly Dance

Jun 16, 2023 2:46 am

imageIn the Sufi movement meditation class, we play a lot of middle eastern music. Sometimes it is deeply meditative and other times it inspires you to dance.

However, if you are not acquainted with Middle Eastern music, it could take some getting used to. The good news is that you will have fewer preconceived notions about how to move. The movement will come in the moment from the music and your body.

Occasionally, I will demonstrate a few belly dance moves to add to your dance vocabulary. Have no concerns about how you look. What is most important is how it feels to move.

Belly dancing can be joyous, soulful, and heart-opening--sometimes all at once. It will improve your breath, your focus, and your health.

Belly dancing:

1.     Involves upper body and arm movement. This provides excellent exercise for the lungs and heart:

A study conducted by the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company shows that orchestra conductors live 38 percent longer than the general population. The reason is simple--conducting (i.e. holding up your arms) is good cardiovascular exercise.

Belly dancing is a lot like conducting an orchestra only instead of conducting the music, the music conducts you. When you add a silk veil to the movement it is like dancing with the wind.

2.     Asks for muscle isolations, muscle groups you didn’t even know you could move separately – like the belly, chest, feet, hands, shoulders, and hips.

3.     Gets you to exercise all the joints in your body, lubricating them while allowing you to move in a variety of directions.

4.     Strengthen your core

5.     Is fun, playful, and energizing.

What could be better than experiencing your belly dancing?

Tomorrow is Friday, June 16th at 8 am PDT, is my next Sufi Moving Meditation class. It’s Free! Join us for the upper body exercise, joint articulation, muscle isolations and the fun. Your body will thank you.
