Returning to the Light
Dec 07, 2023 11:01 pm
While meditating, I heard this fragment of a Christmas carol -- Peace on Earth, Good Will Toward All. It brought tears to my eyes. This is the promise of the Solstice, the Turning from darkness to light on December 21st.
I had the following thoughts . . .
Darkness is on the ascendent both seasonally and politically. It sometimes fells like we are at the breaking point. Then I remember that as darkness increases it also moves toward its turning. The darkest night is always followed by the dawn of the emerging light. This has always been the rhythm of nature -- night to day, Winter to Spring, scarcity to abundance.
There is no advantage in cursing the darkness. It is an essential part of the cycle. There is no experience of light without the contrast of darkness.
However, we must hold and nourish the light in the darkest of times so that it will never extinguish in ourselves or the world. We are the keepers of the light. This is not a burden but a gift because the light infuses us with all its life-nourishing attributes.
Remember also that it is in the darkest dark that the light shines its brightest. And it is only through the cycle of temporary absence that we awaken in awe and gratitude at the return of one or the other.
The moving meditation work we do during the Friday morning Sufi classes, supports us in the cycle of light and dark. It refreshes and magnifies the light inside us and invokes its return in every breath.
The breath mimics the cycle of light and dark with its inhale and exhale. Each inhale draws in light essence while each exhale releases what is used up and no longer needed -- making space for the next inhale. We welcome both the inhale and exhale, light and dark because both are essential to our existence in this world. One cannot exist without the other to set its boundaries and intensify its form.
Let meditation and breath help to define and magnify your form. Celebrate the MOMENT, and the next MOMENT, and the next. Each moment expands as you slow your breathing. No pushing, no straining, no fear! Simply breath after breath.
Breathe in Ahh and exhale Laaa, the name of the Divine in Arabic -- Allah. Call in that essence of our nature to awareness and awakening. Each breath, each syllable becomes a reminder of the rhythm of life and the beauty and rightness of its contrasts.
We are both spirit and human in this 3-dimensional plane. Our humanity, with its daily needs of living, can lull us to sleep, mesmerizing us with its delights and disturbances. The breath is your heartline into the moment, Spirit, light, and love.
Join me this Friday, December 8th at 9 am PST to embrace the rhythm of turning in your heart and spirit.
Or join me on Sunday, December 10th at 8 am PST for a second chance to do a Sufi meditation class. I will be leading this second class through December.
